Bussing Policy
Bus Policy
Elk Island Catholic Schools provides busing for all students through a Transportation Agreement with Elk Island Public Schools. If you chose to have your child use the in-town bus service, fees are $200.00 (grade 1-6), $100.00 (ECS). Families who live more than 2.4 km from St. Martin’s Catholic School will have their fees covered by Alberta Education.
Bus Loading: Buses load on the west and south sides of the school.
Absolutely no parking is allowed in these zones from 8:00 a.m.– 4:00 p.m. Parents should refrain from driving into the parking lot for loading/unloading students. A suggested meeting place is the street east of the school. Students would walk across the playground, thereby avoiding the busy streets on the south and west of the school.
All bus students must be appropriately dressed – cap, mitts, boots, winter jacket, scarf, etc. – must be worn. A bus driver may refuse a student entry who, in his opinion, is not dressed with regard to the weather. Town students should likewise be properly clad at all times.
If buses do not operate on any day and you drive your child to school, it is your responsibility to pick him/her up at dismissal time. When weather advisories are announced over the radio and buses may have to leave early, please ensure your home is accessible when your children arrive from school. Radio stations CFCW, Camrose and CKSA, Lloydminster have appropriate announcements with regards to bus operations and school closures. Should school buses not operate on stormy days, the school will remain open and teachers are on duty. If a student misses a bus, he/she should report to the supervisor, principal or secretary. DO NOT LEAVE THE SCHOOL!
Bus students are expected to go home by bus. Bus drivers must be informed beforehand if children are not using the bus. If your child requires bussing for one day (i.e. birthday party to attend, staying overnight elsewhere), a letter is required from the parent. If space is available, the bus driver will accommodate your child.
Please note below some key changes that were made to the Student Transportation Behavior Plan – Policy IGD on December 21, 2006:
- Any articles transported on a bus must meet the requirements as stipulated in the Traffic Safety Act – School Bus Operation Regulation.
- The use of personal cellular phones, cameras, and recording devices are prohibited on school buses. Electronic games or musical devices, which do not emit noise, are acceptable for use.
- In conjunction with the “Safety Traffic Act”, skateboards, snowboards, skis, and hockey sticks are not permitted on the bus. “Heelies” are not permitted on the bus. All other articles being transported must be fully contained in a canvas bag or case that the student can store under the seat of the bus.
Bussing Information from St. Paul Education
“For the safety of your child(ren), it is important for us at St. Paul Education to know each passenger riding our fleet of school busses. Therefore, non-regular passengers are not permitted to ride our school busses without prior consent from St. Paul Education Regional Division #1. Furthermore, the bus driver does not have the authority to approve or deny special bussing requests. As a result, special requests need to be directed to St. Paul Education
(780-645-3323) for approval. Bus drivers have been directed to deny boarding to any student that is not registered on their bus. All bus drivers will follow these guidelines. If you need further clarification as to why we are following this protocol, please contact Isabelle or Leane at 780-645-3323.”
School Bus Transportation Rules for Student Conduct
Parents are encouraged to contact their bus driver(s) when dealing with issues arising on the bus. The school administration works with the drivers to maintain safe bus travel.
General Regulations: Only the driver, students and authorized personnel may ride the bus. Students are expected to be at their designated boarding locations on time. The bus will not leave the school until ten minutes after dismissal bell unless all students have boarded.
Major Offenses: The following are considered major offenses: refusal to follow the directions of the driver/staff member; use of improper, profane or abusive language or gestures; engaging in, but not limited to, fighting, harassment, intimidation or verbal or physical abuse of other students or staff; use of tobacco or other smoking materials; engaging in willful destruction of property or acts of vandalism; engaging in any dangerous or unsafe behavior; and alcohol and/or controlled substance possession and/or use.
Consequences – Minor Offenses:
Step 1 – Verbal warning to the student. Bus driver records the incident.
Step 2 – Written warning to the student. Bus driver records the incident, completes the misconduct report and the driver (or Student Transportation if deemed advisable) notifies the parent by telephone. Copies of the misconduct form are distributed (1 copy – student/parent, 2 copies – principal, who will forward one completed copy to the Director of Student Transportation.)
Step 3 – Written warning. Bus driver records the incident, completes the misconduct report, reviews the details of the incident with the principal and notifies Student Transportation. Principal discusses the situation with the student and notifies the parents. The next steps in the discipline process are outlined to the student and parents. A meeting is arranged if deemed necessary by the principal or requested by the parents. Copies of the misconduct form are distributed as above.
Step 4 - Suspension can be up to five days depending on the severity of incidence. Bus driver records the incident, completes the misconduct report and reviews the details of the incident with the principal within one school day. Principal discusses the situation with the student and decides if a meeting with the driver is necessary. Principal notifies the parents of the bus suspension and arranges for a meeting with the parents, the student, and the bus driver prior to the student being reinstated from suspension. Student and parents are notified that further misconduct will result in suspension with referral to the Board of Education. Principal notifies Director of Student Transportation by telephone regarding reinstatement date. Student Transportation Director advises the driver(s) by telephone regarding the suspension. Copies of the misconduct form are distributed as above.
Step 5 – Indefinite suspension with referral to the Board of Education. Upon receipt of the student misconduct form and after discussion with both the driver and student and after consultation with the Director of Student Transportation and Supervisor, Alternate Programs (if applicable), the principal shall follow the procedures outlined in Board Policy IGC, Suspension or Expulsion of Students, Part II, Suspension with Referral to the Board of Trustees.
